Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Scholarship
After the assassination of her husband, civil rights leader Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz (1936 – 1997) persevered to raise her six children, received her doctorate, and continued a career, all the while staying true to her values as a member of the Nation of Islam religion. She chose mainly to operate outside of the spotlight, but made occasional appearances to promote civil rights and to relate her husband’s message to the public. **In January 1976, Shabazz became associate professor of health sciences with a concentration in nursing at Medgar Evers College - CUNY. The Medgar Evers student body at that time was 90 percent black and predominantly working-class, with an average age of 26. Black women made up most of the faculty, and 75 percent of the students were female, two-thirds of them mothers. These were all qualities that made Medgar Evers College attractive to Shabazz. **By 1980, Shabazz was overseeing the health sciences department, and the college president decided she could be more effective in a purely administrative position than she was in the classroom. She was promoted to Director of Institutional Advancement. In her new position, she became a booster and fund-raiser for the college. A year later, she was given tenure. In 1984, Shabazz was given a new title, Director of Institutional Advancement and Public Affairs; she held that position at the college until her death.

Marvin Calvin Scholarship
The Marvin Calvin Scholarship will be awarded to deserving graduating senior in the BS of Social Work program, in the one-time amount of $500. Marvin R. Calvin was an alumnus of Medgar Evers College (MEC). He graduated from MEC with honors of Magna Cum Laude in 2013, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work. During his time at MEC, he was a recipient of several Dean’s and President’s awards. Marvin attended Yeshiva University in September 2013 to pursue his Master’s Degree in Social Work.
He was awarded a merit scholarship to attend Yeshiva’s one year advance standing Social Work program. While taking classes as a full time student, Marvin was also a full time manager at Housing Works. He dedicated his time to advocate for social justice for disenfranchised communities he served. He succumbed to a heart attack in 2014. His unexpected passing has created a void in the lives of his wife, children, family members and supportive friends, especially his classmates in the BSSW program at Medgar Evers College. His legacy of dedicated supportive nature and continued empathy for the less fortunate will live on forever.
